Why Beauty Is Actually More Than Skin Deep
Everyone’s heard the adage, “Beauty is skin deep” but in the world of skin care, beauty is actually more than skin deep. Working with burn patients early in my career, I became fascinated by the way some patients’ skin would heal beautifully, with only some light scarring. Others, however, would experience skin healing after awhile but with significant scarring. It didn’t matter that the severity of the burn was the same. Two burn victims, with the same degree of burning, could yield completely different skin results once the healing process was completed. Working with these patients prompted me to research what would cause two seemingly similar burns to heal completely differently. What I discovered was that scarring was simply a DNA mutation and that the burned skin had experienced DNA damage. When we age, our skin goes through the same process, that of damage on a molecular level, or far beneath the actual skin. When damage occurs that deeply, the body continues to reproduce this damaged tissue, which results in the lines and wrinkles you see on older skin. To reverse this effect, most people treat only the skin, which is really just the top layer and the result of deeper damage. Addressing the DNA is ultimately what enables the skin to return to a more healthy and youthful appearance. DNA damage largely occurs when free radical, or damaged cells attack healthy cells. We often refer to these as the toxins in our bodies. These attacks cause our DNA to change and the unhealthy and damaged cells multiply. Many lifestyle and health factors cause these attacks in our bodies, but for the skin, it is primarily the result of ultraviolet rays from the sun. Exposure to ultraviolet light from sunlight accounts for up to 90% of the symptoms of premature skin aging. Other factors include pollution, smoking, chemicals and diet. The good news is that DNA can be repaired through proper care. I regularly use my own created skin care treatments on my clients who see me at Nourishe Medi Spa. These treatments target cellular restoration and results in healthy DNA function. The results include reversal of lines, wrinkles, pigmentation damage, scars, acne, large pores, sagging skin and collagen loss. Since these treatments go far beneath the skin, change begins where it is most needed, more than skin deep. |
